Tour Overview:

World-famous university cities meet hideaway villages on this tour of Eastern England. We'll travel by river and road, across the stunning North York Moors and the Peak District National Park, following in the footsteps of Vikings, Romans and royalty.

Day 1 - Edinburgh - Lindisfarne - Alnwick
Meeting in the iconic city of Edinburgh, we cross into England and meet with hideaway villages on this grand tour. First stop: Lindisfarne to discover the dramatic ruins. To end the day, we carry on to Alnwick Castle where we'll be welcomed into the majestic home of the Duke of Northumberland and spot the sets used in episodes of Downton Abbey. On the menu for tonight: a delicious welcome dinner together. (D)

Accommodation: Gisborough Hall Hotel

Day 2 - Alnwick - Durham - Whitby - North York Moors
The Normans made their mark on this part of England, and possibly the finest example of this is in Durham. Today we'll step inside the Cathedral, a magnificent architectural monument now designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our route carries us to our destination, Whitby and onwards to Captain Cook's Museum. Tonight, rest your head in the charming North York Moors district and enjoy dinner with your fellow travellers. Day 3 - North York Moors - Ripley - Peak District
Capturing hearts and minds of writers and artists for centuries, it's our turn to discover the dramatic Ripley Castle - an iconic country house. To complete a day of historic sightseeing, we end at the stunning Peak District. (B)

Accommodation: Rutland Arms Hotel

Day 4 - Peak District - Chatsworth House - Peak District
Driving through the Peak District with some of England's finest scenery rippling out around us is a real joy. We stretch our legs on a morning stroll at Chatsworth House, infused with Elizabethan history and contemporary culture. See the stunning architecture said to have inspired Jane Austen and the rooms that featured in the film, Pride and Prejudice. We also visit the world famous Blue John Cavern, a series of caves in the Peak District, before returning to our hotel later on. (B,D)

Accommodation: Rutland Arms Hotel

Day 5 - Peak District - Lincoln

We say farewell to the picturesque Peak District and journey onwards to the historic town of Lincoln and visit the Lincoln Cathedral and Castle. Pay close attention as your Tour Leader guides you through the town and make the most of free time afterwards. (B)

Accommodation: White Hart Hotel

Day 6 - Lincoln - Sandringham Estate - Cambridge
Start the day with a visit to a local creamery for a cheese tasting and guided tour to educate the group on the history of stilton cheese. After our appetite is satisfied, we have a date with royalty as we pay a visit to the Sandringham Estate. The private residence of Her Majesty The Queen is a magnificent stately house with picturesque gardens and even a museum. Our final stop of the day takes us to the iconic town of Cambridge. (B)

Accommodation: Anstey Hall Hotel

Day 7 - Cambridge
Admire the beautiful 'Backs' of Cambridge University, spotting world-famous buildings such as The Wren Library and the Bridge of Sighs. Your afternoon in the city is all yours until we meet again for our final evening dinner. Step inside colleges and chapels, museums and galleries - or simply indulge in a little retail therapy. (B,D)

Accommodation: Anstey Hall Hotel

Day 8 - Cambridge - Newmarket - London
There's time for one more behind-the-scenes tour so we delve into England's sporting heritage at Newmarket National Stud. At this working thoroughbred stud farm we may see stallions in the paddocks and, occasionally, foals in the nursery. We'll see in the end of our tour in London, where we say farewell. (B)
